Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. It is made of interlayer that keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large sharp pieces, producing a characteristic “spider web” cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass. The set of glass is treated through a process intended to expel air pockets and then it is heated for an initial round of melting. After this, the glass is heated under pressure to create a finished bound product. The interlayer works to hold the glass fragments together if hit with an impact that would normally shatter it, such as wind storms, bomb blasts, bullets, and forced entry. Laminated glass can be made stronger by adding layers making the end product thicker.

Laminated glass is normally used when there is a possibility of human impact or where the glass could fall if shattered and also for architectural applications. Skylight glazing and automobile windshields typically use laminated glass. One of the main reasons for the use of laminated glass in building envelopes is its safe failure mode compared to that of float glass and tempered glass.

Laminated glass has good transparency, and its impact resistance is several times higher than that of ordinary sheet glass. Due to the adhesion of PVB glue film, even when the glass breaks, its fragments keep binding on the thin film and will not hurt people, and the surface of the fragmented glass remains clean and smooth, which effectively prevents fragments from penetrating or falling, thus ensures human safety. In addition to being found in vehicles, laminated glass is also commonly used for the windows of tall buildings, skylights, balconies, and frameless glass railings.
